The experiences and exploits of a college grad trying to make it in the "real world:" leaving school and friends in New England, moving south, and living with her boyfriend. Watch as I pretend to be an adult.
I mentioned a while ago that I've been feeling an urge to write about the people in my life...you know, just to switch it up a little. Since the girls just came to visit, I figured I'd start with them.
Lee, Kathy, and Alison. Of all my groups of friends, I have to say they are, by far, the most outrageous. I have fun with all of my friends, but these girls- well, it's a completly different kind of fun. There is a boisterous good humour, an "anything goes" attitude with them that makes for the perfect girls night out. Kathy and Lee are old biotappers, from the year before me. We started hanging out gradually, and I think I actually met them through Karen (well, began our friendship through Karen- I'd probably met them at biotap functions and parties before that).
We all started eating lunch at the Blue Wall together sometime Sophmore year, and began hanging out more and more. After a semester of people watching (we were brutal- if you ate at the Blue Wall, we probably made fun of you) it was decided that Lee, Karen and I would get an apartment together. We moved off campus right after the semester let out, and that's when the fun started. Before that point, I'd hung out with Alison socially (she was friends with Kathy and Lee, had lived on their floor), but we weren't exactly close yet. She moved in to share Lee's room for the summer, and that's when our friendship really started. As I grew closer to Ali, Karen started slipping away. We were living right nextdoor to her boyfriend, and she began spending aboout 90% of her free time with him.
**authors note: This is why I don't include Karen in the "chicas" category. She is, and always will be, one of the girls, and when we get together we are always thrilled when she can join us- but she was gone for a lot of the "bonding" experiences, and didn't get to enjoy many of the crazy adventures that I look back on so fondly. I'll write about her later (heh heh heh)**
Social occasions with the girls were/are generally defined by raunchy humour, a lot of alcohol, and a lot of male attention. I remember Dave's birthday, for example. It began with much drinking, and soon double entendres were flying. Before long, we had convinced Dave to show us his muscles, and he was flexing his guns. (Dave actually has very nice guns, and those of you who weren't at the party missed quite a show). There was lots of cudding and before long Dave, Nate-the-great, Lee and I were sitting on the couch.
Somehow we ended up with me between Nate, and Dave, with Lee laying over our laps; Nate's left hand on my knee, his right on Lee's head, Dave's one arm around my shoulders and other drapped over Lee's legs. It was completly innocent- really, no thoughts of orgies or anything- but when I looked over at the group of people across the room, I had a startling revelation: We were those girls. You know, the annoying loud ones who flirt too much? Yeah, that was us- not just that night, but on most nights we went out. The funny thing is, I think we only hooked up with the guys we were flirting with...maybe once for each of us? It wasn't about the guys, really- we didn't go out to find boys to pick up. We went out to have fun, and if there were boys, so much the better.
My favorite experience with the chicas would have to be the night at Aspen Chase. We heard about a huge party there, and Lee, Ali and I headed over. When we got there, we saw that the rumours had not exagerated- the place was packed! For the first part of the night, the party was fun, but not up to our usual standards. Then, around 12, a huge snowball fight broke out. Things got out of hand, a window was smashed, and the cops were called. Normal people would have left, yes? Most of the party did. However, when the cop arrived, he proved to be incredibly cool. He told everyone that he didn't want to break the party up, but that things had to calm down. Things did, he left, and we moved outside. After enduring a couple sketchy boys hitting on us, we were looking around for more entertainment when Alison motioned us in closer and pointed to a handsome boy a few feet away. "Hey, I think he's a german exchange student! Lee, go up to him and say 'Sprechen zie deutsch?' Hurry!"
Not to anyone's surprise, Lee did, and before long we were chatting with a group of German exchange students. After a bit, they invited us back to their apartment, and we sat around drinking Warsteiner and talking. Around four we realized we had to go, and bade them goodbye.
Now, normally, this would be a typical college experience...but Alison, kook that she is, has a bit of a stalker impulse in her. And so, just about every time we drove by AC, (usually on our way to or from Dave's) nothing would do but that we stop in and cruise slowly by, checking to see if our german friends might happen to be, say, sunbathing shirtless or something. It really wasn't obsessive scarey restraining order type behaviour- just harmless amusement...I swear! Heh.
Our little group had its ups and downs. We had fights and falling outs, and our friendship has been strained. Ali and I had a run in (over a boy, how silly). Lee and Ali had a run in (over a boy, again- how very silly indeed). Kathy got upset with everyone, or everyone got upset with Kathy- I don't remember which. But despite everything, we all can always get together and have an amazing time- and we're still there for each other.
They are my wonderful, fun, outrageous, fearless chicas, and I love them.
