The experiences and exploits of a college grad trying to make it in the "real world:" leaving school and friends in New England, moving south, and living with her boyfriend. Watch as I pretend to be an adult.
Albert Einstein, among others, said that the average person only uses about 10% of their brain. While we now know that's not true, it certainly seems like it sometimes. This drives me crazy. People like to complain about the sheer stupidity of the comman man, when, in my opinion, most Americans really aren't that dumb. We have a basic level of nutrition and education in this country that goes a long way towards preventing the kind of developmental stagnation that is necessary for real, honest to goodness, idiocy. I'm not saying that such people don't exist, mind you- they do. Just that in most cases a lack of mental faculties is not the major problem. What is? Laziness. A cultural wariness of and disdain for intellectual endevors. A fear of "looking dumb" or feeling stupid. Despite the fact that college enrollment and matriculation has increased dramatically in recent years, people seem to be getting less and less out of it. So many freshman I know go into college looking for a major that will make them money when they graduate. They take the fewest credits, and put in the least effort possible. People seem to lack curiousity. They're reluctant to try and learn new things. People who do are viewed with suspicion and distrust- no one wants to thing that someone else is smarter than they are. Look at our last election. Despite the fact that Kerry and Bush went to the same college, come from very wealthy families, and occupy just about the same socio-economic niche, who was labeled as the rich over-educated eletist? The man who could pronounce "nuclear" properly. Did you know that the average American spends four hours a day watching television? This compares to an average of one to two hours socializing, Two and a half hours preparing/eating food, one hour cleaning and doing household chorse, one hour exercising or playing a sport, thirty minutes reading, and ten minutes playing a musical instrument. My god, people! Turn off the boob tube! Read a book or something- geez!
