    Dancin' in the dark

What I'm listening to: The National, Son

Last Friday I draged Elija out to a great little dive in Chapel Hill. It was a hole in the wall, but had this amazing, low-key vibe. People stood around in jeans, clutching plastic cups of domestic beer, attention focused on the small stage in the corner. With a few exceptions, everyone seemed like they were there to "see" and not just "be seen."
The first band was rather mediocre, though they had ther moments. They sounded like your typical sophmoric alt rock band with punky influences. Some of their songs are catchy, but nothing that struck me as outstanding. The second band...the second band was incredible.
They were probably the scruffiest, least attractive band I've ever seen. Somehow that "rock star glamour" had left them entirely unscathed. Their stage presence was akward, to say the least. The lead singer seemed almost spastic, writhing in convulsive movements as he spouted lyrics, while the guitarists proved, yet again, that white men just can't dance...and really, really shouldn't try.
But their sound was amazing. They experimented a bit, moving away from the tried and true beat and riffs you generally hear. They had a nice mix of hard and soft. But what really blew me away was their singer's voice. It was absolutely outstanding. Truly amazing. Deep, rich, and emotive- it managed to turn slightly above average tunes into something that really rocked.
This band is The National, and I can't say enough about them. They're an emerging band that has been producing under their own lable for a few years, and recently got signed with Virgen. I can't wait to get their albums...yes, albums, I want all of them. They sound a bit like Interpol, a bit like Johhny Cash, and listening to them just gives me goosebumps. Incredible stuff!
