The experiences and exploits of a college grad trying to make it in the "real world:" leaving school and friends in New England, moving south, and living with her boyfriend. Watch as I pretend to be an adult.
Well, actually, we're really into any holiday that involves lots of food and lots of wine- Christmas happens to also include presents, which makes it even better.
Every year since I can remember, we've had a huge tree with lots of presents under it. My stepmom is particularly into decorating the tree, so every year since she and my dad married our tree has always been very large and very beautiful.
Seriously- she does color schemes and everything, I swear.
As a kid, I loved decorating the tree. Our living rooms have always has fireplaces in them, so hanging ornaments and stringing lights was always a ritual including a cracking fire, classical music, and something warm in a mug- cocoa when I was young, tea as I got older.
When I left for college, I missed that part of the holidays- the decorating was always done by the time I got back from final exams- but I loved coming home to the changes. Given the craziness of finals and how quickly time seems to pass during them, the transformation always struck me.
This year a new tradition was born- sort of. On Saturday, Elija and I bought a little potted pine tree, lights, and ornaments, and decorated our own tree. It's not as big or as fancy as the trees I remember, but somehow that seems more appropriate. I have to admit, I rather like the idea of having a little tree that stays with us year after year, growing and getting a little stronger- hopefully just as we will.
So, without further sappiness (what can I say, Christmas makes me sentimental), here is our little Christmas tree:
